This is a brief article but with a powerful point.

We have all made mistakes. Some of those mistakes we can carry with us for a long time. We may even define ourselves by them.

We may think we need to forgive others.

We may need we think to forgive ourselves.

I invite you to think about it a different way.

If you could have done it differently at the time - wouldn't you have done so?

But you didn't, did you?

You did it the way you knew how or thought best at the time.

And now, perhaps years later, you realise (or wish) you could have done it better.

But you didn't DID you?

Because you couldn't.

And that's the whole point. You know better NOW because youre more mature, because you've learned how to manage yourself better, and lifes experiences have taught you something.

And its taken you all this time to learn how to do better which is something you couldn't have done at the time.

So there's nothing to forgive. And there's nothing to regret.

Don't get me wrong, there are consequences for things we do. We have to live with them and we also often have to pay for the things we've done.

But there's no point blaming ourselves and wishing we could reinvent the past because the simple, brutal and liberating truth is that we did what we did at the time and its who are NOW that counts.

We are not defined by your past despite what other people say. Today, we are better, stronger and wiser. It is who you are today that counts. Don't carry a past that you cannot change and could not have done differently.

The freedom that comes that knowing you are growing from today is palpable, and invigorating.

Your only responsibility is to grow into the man or woman God has called you to be like Christ. That's enough of a task without dragging the past behind you.
