Christian Coaching and the Question: "Why am I here?"

Why is your coach’s answer to the question “Why (or ‘for what purpose) am I here so important?

Because….his or her beliefs on the subject will undoubtedly affect some of the questions he or she will ask you whilst coaching you.

Why does this even matter?

It matters because a Christian wants to have the honor of Christ foremost in his mind. It matters because if your coach does not have those values he might not even think to ask you those questions that assist you in doing this?

We, as believers, know we have blind spots to our own sin at times. We fall into “the sin that so easily entangles” meaning that ”if the blind lead the blind they will both fall into a pit”.

But can’t a good coach work with anyone? No. Not when eternal salvation is involved.

We need our coach to ask us the difficult questions to enable us to walk along the narrow road.

In fact, should a Christian coach ever seek to do coaching that does not address the supremacy of Christ in all things? It’s an interesting question.

My take on it is that when we coach people who expressly are not interested in our faith we should avoid that issue and witness with our lives “spreading the gospel without saying a word” as I believe St Augustine said to do.

However, when we have clients who are Christians – we are failing in our duty to look out for our brothers and sisters if we do not help them with a heart check about the results they want.

How, you may ask, is this related to “Why are we here?”

Well, if we are created for a purpose or purposes then to fulfill them we need to make decisions that align with those purposes. And our coach needs to ask us how our decisions fit in with His purposes.

Col 1:16b says “All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things…so that in everything He might be preeminent.”

Did you catch that? All things were created FOR Him so that He might have the supremacy in all things. We were created for Him so that He might bring glory and honor to the Lord Jesus Christ.”

How does thinking about a decision in that light affect what you do and the way you do it?

What if your coach were to ask: “How will taking this promotion bring honour to Christ?”

“How does putting Christ first factor into buying this house or moving to this place?”

For some people, this question will make them uncomfortable. Why? Because so many of us have bought into the secular notion that comfort should be the defining variable – that the question: “How will this help me consume more?” is really what drives us.

I, as a coach, am not a perfect man. I need, I rise, I fall. Sometimes I am think and act like a hypocrite. I can admit it because I don’t need to pretend. Christ is my Saviour: I am not my Saviour.

I need brothers to ask me: How does this decision further enable you to live your faith, Doug? Does this decision honor God?
